Homemade Gelato Comments

Gelato

Gelato, translating to "frozen" in Italian, is an Italian-style ice cream with a base made from milk, sugar, and other all natural ingredients that is denser and more flavorful than American ice cream.
Gelato contains a smaller amount of butterfat, 4-8% in comparison to 14-25% of Ice Cream, and a reduced amount of sugar, meaning that generally gelato has around one-half of the fat that ice cream does, not to mention only half of the calories!

Another difference between ice cream and gelato is the amount of air. More air is added to ice cream than gelato in an effort to increase the volume of the finished product and make it look bigger. However this addition of extra air brings about a lower quality outcome, therefore gelato ends up with a richer, creamier
texture and more concentrated flavor than ice cream.

The distinctions between gelato and ice cream may seem slight, but when considered together, result
in Gelato being a superior treat that is healthier and more flavorsome. Also remember that at Delicato
we make our Gelato using the finest, freshest and natural ingredients. and we do not use any premixes,
artificial colors or High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) as in most ice creams sold at the stores.

A Cool History

EVERYONE ENJOYS A REFRESHINGLY COOL TREAT, ES PECIALLY ON A HOT DAY. THE PROOF IS IN THE LONG SPANNING HISTORY OF GELATO.

Frozen Delights made from snow and flavorings such as wine, fruit, or honey go back as far as 3000 years ago. But there is a significant difference between flavored ice and the creamy dairy products sold as gelato today. That evolution can be attributed to Bernardo Buontalenti of Florence, Italy in the 16th century, when
the famous painter invented a revolutionary gelato made with eggs that was a far superior creation than the flavored snow of the time. This advancement may have brought gelato closer to its modernday taste, but the quality ingredients used and slow production process would mean that gelato was a luxury only afforded to the rich for some time.

Then along came Procopio del Coltelli, known as the grandfather of gelato. He created the first ice cream-making machine, perfecting the ability to make the frozen product last longer and maintain a higher quality. This development made gelato more affordable, and Procopio opened his own café and sold it to the public, making it available to the masses for the first time.

The creators of the gelato are skilled artisans who perfect their craft, always striving towards the tastiest gelato. Delicato Creamery is no different, where we work to produce the finest, most delicious gelato on this side of the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy it and have a sweet day!!
